| [ETC.] accents! |
[19 Mar 2010|01:31pm] |
What are your guys' thoughts on writing out accents in RP? That is, in a journal/social networking setting, not in dialogue in a scene. I don't mean, say, phonetically writing out all the nuances of Highland dialects or something, but if you have a character from, for example, the South, writing "y'all" and "gonna" and "ain't" instead of actual correct grammar, regardless of their education level. I know I do it a lot (e.g. Carver, Caroline), even if the character might be very well educated and, logically, would probably write in proper grammar/spelling if they were a real person. Caroline, for example, probably wouldn't write "ain't," since she prides herself on being a ~classy Southerner~ -- but I absolutely put it into her comments when I feel it necessary, because I like to preserve the sound of how she talks to a reasonable degree. I guess it comes down to: do you feel it's more important to stick to a realistic characterization, in which--even though the character might say things like "y'all" and "ain't"--they write in normal, Standard English; or do you feel it's okay to write in a slight dialect if the character has one? Do you think it detracts from their characterization if you're OOCly deciding to write out their accent, even though they ICly would not?
Relatedly, catchphrases! I know there have been memes that have gone around regarding ways in which our characters speak/write, but I'm thinking specifically about a certain phrase (or phrases) your characters might say. When I was playing Eddie at Xover, I made a very conscious choice that "Christ above" and "whoa whoa whoa," innocuous as they might be, were going to be things he said pretty regularly. That is, I would make a point to respond with them, rather than some other exasperated/surprised phrase, if a situation called for it. Does anyone else do that? If your characters have ~catchphrases~, do you actively think of/about them, or do they just sort of happen during the course of playing that character? If they don't have specific catchphrases, are their certain types of expressions or a certain way of speaking that you specifically identify with them? Like, Hildr didn't have one particular thing she would say, but she did have a type of exclamation (BY THE HAMMER OF THOR!!! BY ODIN'S RAVENS!!!! BY THE BLESSED GOWN OF FREYJA!! etc.) that I very much identified with her.
GIVE ME YOUR THOUGHTS.

oh my god so many apps. On the plus side, I actually finished a group log today! After making everyone wait for like, weeks on my tags. I still consider this an accomplishment. I'm starting to get back into the logging groove again, even if I can only really tag on weekends, so if you guys need anything, hit me up! Open-ended logs are still going to be tough, but if it's a short thing or something specific to a plot/scene/development, I'm totally down.

Things I cannot stop doing:
1) Listening to Moon River by Percy Faith (and his orchestra). 2) Making characters. Please see here and here. 3) Being a fail. 4) Getting my characters into fights on their respective journaling systems. IT'S THE WEEK FOR IC FIGHTS, I GUESS. 5) Watching this. 6) Staying up later than is really responsible in order to be a good worker at work. Oh, well, I have Fridays off now. :] 7) Writing and then deleting answers to that six-word meme. Seriously, why did everyone else have to set such a high bar? I WAS THE SECOND PERSON TO POST THE MEME FFS MY ANSWERS ARE ALLOWED TO BE LAME 8[
In other news, I think Emma is having her first :| moment OF THE ENTIRE GAME, Alex is taking up the reins now that Pedo Bear has been destroyed with the Earth, he is also shitting his pants about possibly getting to dick around with alien tech, speedforce is a vile temptress, and I think the Davies-O'Brien room on the Dreadnaught needs to have a pot-and-Pixar party. You know, if they could get a hold of pot.

| UPDATES |

1) So I think the way things will work re: RP/hiatus, is that I'll be largely unavailable during the week, but still around on the weekends. Or, well, Friday and Saturday, since I work Sunday to Thursday. SO YAY FOR THAT.
2) Oh my God, I am bringing in two characters to Evo, and one of them is just. Just so ridiculous. I apologize to everyone in advance. Everyone.
3) GOD I LOVE THIS SIX WORD MEME. I have mini-drabbles coming into my inbox all day and it is pretty much the best day ever. It's also inspiring~~ me to write proper drabbles, so I will be working on those :]
4) ;lakj;wek Rae has me reading old Xover entries and LOL LOL JUST ALL OF THIS ENTRY. God, I loved Nick/Carrie/Moses. I LOVED THEM SO MUCH.

omg this is such a good idea.
Comment here with one or more of our pairings (romantic, platonic, haterade, whatever), and I will write you a drabble in six-ish words. It will either be six words exactly, or several six-word lines. You can request more than once!

SEVERAL THINGS:
1) It is hiatus time! It's nothing bad--I'm just so dead from work like, all the time, and so unmotivated to do anything even related to apps or docs* or commentbombing that requires higher level thinking. Also I'm started to Freak Out about a possible new job (lol ik, ik) some six hours or so away, which is making both a) writing the cover letter really difficult and b) thinking about RP really difficult. Also also I am doing more non-RP writing, which is A Good Thing, so I'm going to ride that train for right now. SO YEAH, HIATUS. But go ahead and ping me if you need any of my characters really badly, and I will try my best to jump in ♥
2) My brother has gotten into drawing manga hardcore. I guess it is that time of life. And after 13 years of hating brussel sprouts with a passion, I made them for him Saturday night and he had like half the goddamn serving platter. I love that little dude. 8]
3) THANK YOU ALL WHO GAVE ADVICE RE: DRY HANDS. I've been using pretty much all the tips (outside of cortizone, since I am broke/too lazy to go to the store) and it is helping immensely. Fact: no insane cracked and bleeding fingers today! I count this as a victory.
* Mara and Ash, I will still totally tag ours so we can finish it out, though.

Today was a good and a bad day at work:
THE GOOD 1) Tips! Well, this was yesterday, but yesterday was HORRIBLE, so I am counting it in among today's goods. Even if it was only two bucks. Whatever, the guy was adorable. 2) Adorable old people asking my advice! Admittedly, I know jack shit about touristy things to do in Tucson, because I am not a tourist. I lied. 3) Tentatively hot guy lingering around the breakfast area to stare at me. Was either checking me out or sizing me up for a lady suit. I was sort of engrossed in mopping (I JUST WANTED TO FINISH) so I couldn't see if he was like, actually attractive. BUT TENTATIVELY. 4) Hilarious conversations with my coworkers. Fact: I enjoy working Wednesdays, because the guy who is actually close to my age is there, and he looks nerdy, so I am hoping one day when I inevitably slip up and say something about, idk, Black Canary, he will know what the fuck I am talking about. 5) Spending four hours worrying that the "see me" convo with my boss was going to be a disciplinary one, only to find out it was her roundabout way of having me remind her to look at a weird stain on the countertop we couldn't get off. 6) New recruits. I will get to train someone, which is immense, since it means only three weeks into the job I am now qualified to be someone's superior~
THE BAD 1) I have successfully burnt the top of every single finger at least once while taking shit out of the oven. I have blisters on my knuckles. It looks like I was recently in some sort of cage match. 2) My hands are so dry from washing and being wet for hours on end that my skin not only flakes, but cracks. As in, it is so dry that my thumb split open while I was reaching for milk in the fridge, successfully getting blood all over like 10 different things before I noticed I was bleeding. OH MY GOD MY HANDS ARE SO DRY PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR DRY SKIN REMEDIES
lovedbythesun, I swear I am working on apps, but I have been so exhausted the past few weeks that I can barely do more than leave retarded Jubilee comments around, and even then. Tomorrow is my last day of telemarketing, which means I can actually sleep in the afternoons (before I find another job, lulz :/). I feel bad sitting on these holds; any holds, really. But apps take like, a thousand times more effort than commenting or logs, you know? idk why.
Also, also, I will be out of town this weekend for the annual Japanese festival with my bffl up in Phoenix! DON'T DO ANYTHING I WOULDN'T DO, INTERNETS. This leaves you with a lot of wiggle room, but whatever.
EDIT. Wow. Just, wow. Looking through the arizona tag at ontd_p is like falling down the rabbit hole while on LSD and possibly being hit in the head repeatedly with a piece of wood.

Me: Oh man, I am so behind on apps! I really need to work on them, but I'm going to watch Avatar instead, because that is a productive use of my time. Me: *trolls LF flist for two hours*
AND YET I STILL CAN'T WRITE THESE APPS MOTHERFUCK ME. Okay. I am going to get Gene done tonight, once I shower and go to the grocery store and make mozzarella sticks and chocolate chip cookies and some kind of pasta and/or couscous and/or polenta situation.
Maybe. Whatever, it'll be done by tomorrow, so help me God.

This makes me realize: Jubilee isn't a virgin (surprise!) but she hasn't had a single crush or hook up in game. I mean, she briefly liked Art for a month or so, but I wouldn't even call that a crush so much as Enjoyed Spending Time With Slightly More Than Other People. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? SHE IS LIKE THE ONLY CHARACTER IN GAME WHO HAS NO ROMANTIC HISTORY
Unrelatedly, girl is so mad about Logan. SO MAD. I should probably narrative it, but lol this plot is not about Jubilee. She will definitely be writing him letters about Paradise Gen-X style once she stops being emo over him, though. :> Fact: I need more Gen-X shenanigans in general, ngl.
